The full recording of our most recent Harmony Circle is available here.
For this Harmony Circle, Moriel Rothman-Zecher returned to be in conversation with Albert. Moriel joined our Harmony Circle in May 2024 and his conversation with Albert affected me profoundly. His book, “Sadness is a White Bird”, is one of my favourite books ever – and is the reason that I cold called him a year ago to ask if he would join us in circle – never imagining he would say yes!
His book tells a heart-breakingly beautiful story of a young man who is preparing to serve in the Israeli army while also trying to reconcile his close relationship to two Palestinian siblings with his deeply ingrained loyalties to family and country. This story follows somewhat closely to Moriel’s own life experiences. In Ottawa, you can buy his book from Octopus Books here.
This Harmony Circle is opened by Monalisa, one of the beautiful members of our Harmony Circles team, who among other things is part of Films 4 Falasteen.
Monalisa mentions another book we should all read – “The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine” by Rashid Khalidi – which you can also get at Octopus Books here in Ottawa.
And one of our participants, Marianne, shared this important information and the corresponding resources during the conversation:
Our Ontario Education Workers Caucus has published a scathing report, demonstrating an epidemic of anti-Palestinian racism in Ontario public schools. 65 Delegations to School Boards across the province were documented and analyzed to show rampant Genocide-Denial, Erasure, and Retaliation Against Advocates. The report includes a legal note from the Legal Centre for Palestine and recommendations for the province adopted from organized Palestinian families like Toronto Palestinian Families.
