My Upstanders and I have been learning more about the Municipal Election this fall.
We chose a few issues that we felt were important and looked through the Mayoral Candidates’ platforms to see where they stood on these issues. I am sad to say that because we only have one hour to meet online each week, we were only able to look into what the four main Mayoral Candidates stated on the issues. We have summarized our learning on “Affordable Housing” and “A Safer Ottawa” and you can read our thoughts here.
We have also looked at the issue of waste, recycling and the proposed waste-to-energy (incinerator) technology solution. I will get to summarizing that ASAP and add it to the above linked document!
We then came up with five questions that we sent out to all the Mayoral Candidates on Friday, Oct 9. You can read our questions here.
As we receive responses, we will share them here:
Ali’s response was so thoughtful and in depth. The kids and I were really touched by his responses, and the effort he put in for us. This is the kind of compassion we want to hear from all the Mayoral Candidates – and the energy we want the new Mayor to bring to the table – on these important issues. Imagine how good the world would be if every adult took the time and care to respond to children like this!
We received a great response to our Mayoral Candidate questions from Josh Rachlis in video form — and he even wrote us a song! We love that Josh took the time to really speak with the kids in this video – thanking them for the work they do, proposing that we meet at a later date so the kids can teach him more about what they have learned. We might even build out the song a bit more! Having a World-Changing Kids theme song would be pretty awesome.
