As you may remember, my Upstanders and I attended the Rally of Allies for Court Support, on October 8, 2025, to stand in solidarity with Kebaowek First Nation’s fight against the nuclear waste dump being proposed a mere 1.1 km from the Ottawa River. At that event we got to meet Leah Gazan, NDP MP for Winnipeg Centre, and she suggested that we work on an online petition for people to sign to show their support for Kebaowek’s fight. She said that once we get 500 signatures, she will read it in the House of Commons and invite my Upstanders and I to attend!

We have been working away at this since then. We wrote a draft of this petition and then ran it by Levin at RAVEN for his review and approval (Raven is the law firm supporting Kebaowek’s legal fight).
Then we sent it to Leah’s office and we worked with her staff and the House of Commons clerks to make sure everything was correct.
Then we worked with Justin Roy, Councilor for Kebaowek First Nation, to make sure that he agreed with the wording of the petition and the way in which we were moving forward on this.
Then on our Upstanders Meeting on March 5, the kids and I created an account for petitions, submitted the petition, reached out to the five friends who agreed to be the first five signatories and were able to see the number of signatories increase to five on the website as they signed it! So cool.

Then these were the next steps that had to happen before the petition went live:

All of these steps were completed in six days after we submitted the petition. This has been such a great learning experience – for both the kids and for me!
