My heart is broken by the newest round of restrictions, and the resulting isolation and disconnection. I am not looking to debate the rules or restrictions, I am just here to say that it sucks, it is not fair, and I am worried about all of us – especially our kids. So what do we do? What can we do to ease the sadness and loneliness? The only answer I can come up with is that we love more – we love louder, we love bigger, we love with more vulnerability. We do everything we can to show those we love that they are loved and not alone.

Under these conditions, this online camp is even more important and special to me. We will come together for a few hours of friendship, joy, learning, laughter, art and creativity. We will learn about Indigenous culture, history and brilliance from my friend Samantha, from Sisters Hlgiikw. We will make beautiful art with Lucy, the illustrator of Samantha’s book “Sisters Learn Traditional Foods”. We will talk about Reconciliation and take social justice actions to help make things better – like writing a letter to our Prime Minister about the Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Final Report. With the help of my friend Nancy, from Practice Making Art, we will create a beautiful online Zine so that the kids can share all of their learning with the world.

We will make sure that the kids learn the truth about residential schools, LGBTQ+ from an Indigenous lens, land acknowledgements, and stereotypes and misconceptions. We will learn together so that we can understand more and have more compassion. These kids will become the truth tellers and they will move forward through the world knowing how to truly listen in order to help make things better. We will share so much light and love with the kids, and with the world, that we will help to make the darkness a little less.

And we want your awesome kids to join us.
